Okay, that's all done, now for some
real system tuning, ready?
If anytime you need some advise or have a question, e-Mail me and I'll
try to help out.
Here are some more things you can do to make it run even smoother
and efficiently.
Open your file
manager. (Explorer, etc.)
Create a new folder on your
C:\ drive ( or wherever you have Windows installed),
named ' Y
'. Next, open the Windows
folder.
Drag and drop the ' Startup 'folder to
the new ' Y
' folder.
Now, open the ' Options ' folder in
Windows.
Drag and drop the ' Cabs ' folder to the
new ' Y
' folder.
(If you're ever prompted for this location (Cabs folder),
simply select it from the drop down menu in the prompt.)
Now, restart your computer.
There, you just took two folders that tend to clutter up (slow
down) Windows
and moved them so Windows will run faster. Slick, yes?
There are other
folders you can do this with, but that involves the Registry Edit
program.
This is a bit more involved, but not ridiculously hard. We'll get
into this later.
(NOTE ! You
never "PLAY" in the registry !
This is where many system configurations are set,
and one thing deleted or done wrong can cause you grief.
Do not attempt to work with the registry until and unless{!}
you are well versed in the processes involved.)
Now, run Scandisk.
When it's finished, run your Disk Defragment program. Now restart
again.
There, best it can be for now. Notice any difference? Thought you
might !
You saw that we
created a ' Y ' folder. There's a reason for this.
Imagine the folder layout on your hard drive as a ladder.
The more programs you load into the ' Program Files ' folder, the
more you slow down the system.
Reason is that the commands must travel up and down that ladder
several extra times to complete a program.
If you install to folders below Windows, as in ' Y ' (or ' X ', ' Z ', ' Z1 ',
etc.),
the commands flow in a much smoother and faster
sequence.
Don't just move programs you've already installed, though !
They've been entered
into the registry, settings have been logged, etc.,
and moving them to somewhere else will virtually guarantee that
they'll quit running properly.
You can uninstall them and then re-install them in the new folder
layout.
(A good way to do this is by naming each program like this ---
zPrintshop, yfaxsend, etc., etc..
This way, you'll never "lose" a program that you
installed.)See screenshot.
Notice there are a couple of folders
ahead of Windows. That's because some programs
don't give you a choice of where they're installed. Those you just
have to live with.
